Jamaican Medical Clinic Provides Needed Health Care

The fifth annual summer Jamaican Medical Clinic, sponsored by the Hillsborough County Osteopathic Medical Society of Tampa, Florida, treated a record number of two-hundred sixty-one patients providing much needed health care in the area of Treasure Beach, Jamaica that does not have any medical services within twenty-five miles.

The medical team consisted of three physicians, thirteen medical students, two nurses, and two aides. The team conducted medical screenings, physicals, blood pressure and blood sugar checks, and special treatments depending on individual health matters. Donated medical supplies were distributed to those patients in need of further medical care.

Leading the adventure for these clinics the past five years was HCOMS Executive Director, Kenneth Webster, Ed.D. Attending physicians were Dr. James Vogler, Dr. Rowena Ravano and Dr. David Weiland. Nurses assisting the clinic were Leslie Gibson and Kelly Sassano.

Over the five year span of the project, which includes three midyear clinics as well, the medical teams have served over 1,200 patients in this area of Jamaica and have provided over $20,000 in medical supplies.

PCOMS Plans Activities with St Petersburg College

The Pinellas County Osteopathic Medical Society Board of Directors recently approved joint ventures with St. Petersburg College that will provide scholarships for Pinellas County students enrolled in Health Sciences programs at the college and will coordinate an annual health fair for students prior to the next school year.

The scholarship program plan is to offer five $1,000 scholarships to Pinellas County students enrolled in health sciences classes at the Caruth Heath Education Center in Pinellas Park. At this facility, the St. Petersburg College offers several different health sciences career programs including nursing, radiology, dental, physical therapy and veterinary technology. College staff and PCOMS staff will determine the scholarship recipients.

The Health Fair will be held in August 2012 at the Caruth Health Education Center in conjunction with the college and the Pinellas County Health Department. The fair will offer medical screenings to students prior to the opening of the school year. Physical exams, vision and hearing tests, and other physical screenings will be offered to high school and middle school students. Dr. Samuel Gubernick, PCOMS Board Member, will serve as coordinator for this event.

PCOMS is pleased to partner with the St. Petersburg College and the Pinellas County Health Department in providing these services to students in Pinellas County.
